The Tower

Facing fears one step at a time (gradual exposure)

What the kid practices: Climbing a tower of small brave steps toward something scary, rating how scary each floor feels. Discovering that you can handle the fear even when it feels hard.

Good for: Anxiety · Avoidance · Specific fears · Building confidence

For a child's real-life fears, this one is best done with a therapist's guidance.

Free. Kids never need an account. Therapists and parents can guide from their own screen.

A good match when the kid is working on: avoiding things because they feel scary.

The stories

Each story is about a character the kid's age. Because it is about someone else, a kid can think through a hard situation without having to admit it is theirs.

mira character

Mira: social anxiety

Mira gets really nervous in social situations at school. Even small things like raising her hand or eating in the cafeteria make her stomach hurt.

theo character

Theo: fear of failure

Theo avoids anything he might not be good at because failing feels unbearable. He only does things he knows he can succeed at.

isla character

Isla: fear of rejection

Isla never puts herself out there socially because she's convinced people will say no. She waits for others to invite her instead of reaching out.

nolan character

Nolan: fear of conflict

Nolan avoids disagreeing with anyone because he's afraid of making people mad. He goes along with whatever others want, even when it makes him unhappy.

aria character

Aria: fear of new things

Aria sticks to the same routine every day. She eats the same lunch, sits in the same seat, and avoids anything unfamiliar because the unknown feels scary.

dax character

Dax: fear of embarrassment

Dax obsesses over what other people think. He avoids doing anything that might make him look silly, even if it means missing out on things he wants to do.

priya character

Priya: fear of failing after trying hard

Priya studied every night for a week for her chemistry test and got a 58. Now the test is folded at the bottom of her backpack. She hasn't told her parents, avoids her teacher's eyes in class, and stays up past 1 a.m. rereading notes for the next quiz because she is afraid it will happen again.

theo character

Theo: overwhelmed by getting started

Theo has three missing assignments and a science project due Friday. Every time he opens his backpack, his chest gets tight and his brain says it's too much to even start. So he waits until he "feels ready," tells his mom he's almost done, and closes the laptop. He is afraid that if he starts, he'll find out he can't catch up or the work will be too hard.

isla character

Isla: fear of sleeping alone

Isla falls asleep only when her mom lies down next to her. If she wakes up in the night, she walks straight to her parents' room and climbs into their bed. She is afraid that if she is alone in the dark, something bad will happen and no one will come, or that she won't be able to calm herself down. She's too afraid to do sleepovers with other kids.

kai-angry character

Kai: fear of trying new foods

Kai eats the same few foods and refuses almost anything new. When a new food lands on his plate, or a food he used to like looks or smells different, he cries, yells at his parents, and says they are torturing him. In his head it sounds like this: "This is gross. They want me to starve. I never get what I want." He is afraid a new food will taste disgusting, be different and wrong, or make him gag.
